Autism and ADHD: A Terrain, Gut-Brain, and Nervous-System Approach
A clinical framework for nervous system dysregulation, for practitioner use.
Purpose
This brief gives practitioners the framework for supporting children and adults with nervous-system dysregulation: the cumulative burden of the modern environment, the gut-brain axis as the organizing hub, the balance of excitation and inhibition in the nervous system, and why foundations and the gut come first. It is professional education from Dr. Jason Miller, Mederi Center, reflecting his clinical approach.
Clinical Framework
The approach is terrain-first and root-cause. Dr. Miller organizes the drivers around three factors: environmental toxins, nutrient deficiencies, and chronic infections, layered on top of the digital and environmental load of modern life. The gut-brain axis is the hub, with GI health closely linked to attention and regulation. A traditional Chinese medicine lens adds the picture of heat and the liver, and an 'earth-school' instinct to treat the gut first. Nervous-system work is framed as calming excitation (supporting GABA and glycine signaling, magnesium at the calcium channel) rather than stimulating.
You are not imagining the increase. Autism is now identified in about 1 in 31 children and ADHD in about 1 in 9, and the two co-occur in roughly 50 to 70 percent of cases. Support the terrain and the gut first, calm an over-excited nervous system, and lower the total burden before chasing symptoms.
Clinical Discussion
The modern burden
Environmental and digital exposures add to the load a developing nervous system has to manage. Reducing that burden, starting with identifying and removing exposures, is part of the clinical picture, not separate from it.
The gut-brain hub
GI health is treated as the center hub, with spokes to the rest of the body. Daily, comfortable bowel function and a well-nourished gut are early goals. Diet comes first: off sugars and processed foods, good fiber, clean protein and fats.
Detox pathways, then binders
Dr. Miller's sequence is to get the detoxification pathways working first and then introduce gentle binders, supporting the body's own glutathione production through adaptogens and building blocks rather than giving glutathione directly.
Calming an excitatory nervous system
Glycine and magnesium are used to support the inhibitory side of the nervous system, which is often where children with attention and regulation challenges need help, including for sleep.
Foundations first
The standard base Dr. Miller reaches for is an adaptogen foundation with essential fatty acids and calming minerals, established before more targeted support.
Every formula reflects Donnie Yance's synergistic, fully disclosed design. The work supports the terrain, the gut, and the nervous system together rather than pushing a single pathway.
Methylation-sensitive children may not tolerate certain B-vitamin forms; individualize. Scale pediatric doses carefully. Where environmental toxin or mold involvement is suspected, test before treating. Hold oncology cautions in mind for glutathione and glutamine strategies. Use NAC rather than whey where dairy is not tolerated. Refer per clinical indication and note perinatal risk factors.

Building a Protocol for Nervous System Dysregulation
ADHD and autism, for children (with scaling) and adults.
Who this is for
Practitioners supporting children and adults with attention, sensory processing, and nervous-system regulation challenges, including the common ADHD and autism overlap.
Starting point
Begin with foundations and the gut. Dr. Miller's standard base is Vital Adapt®, Complete Omega Essentials®, and glycine with magnesium, with diet addressed first.
The layered sequence
- Layer 1, Foundations: Vital Adapt® and Complete Omega Essentials®, with glycine and magnesium for calming. Diet first: off sugars and processed foods, good fiber, clean protein and fats.
- Layer 2, Gut and detox: Support the gut and the detox pathways before binders. Where toxin or mold burden is suspected, test first, support the clearance route, and use gentle binders only once the pathways are working.
- Layer 3, Targeted support: Vibrant Mind® and continued calming support. Dr. Miller's broader 'ADHD basics' list included practitioner-directed adjuncts (below), individualized and test-guided.
- Lifestyle and spiritual care: Time in nature, a media fast, music, and Epsom-salt baths before bed, as part of a whole-person plan.
Detox sequencing
Identify and reduce exposure first. Support the body's own glutathione production through adaptogens and building blocks rather than giving glutathione directly. Use sweating (sauna, adapted and shortened for children, or increased water and electrolytes) as a clearance route, and introduce gentle binders only after the pathways are open.
Pediatric scaling (Dr. Miller's approach)
Most reference doses are adult. For children roughly 7 to 13 or 14, cut the dose in half; for younger children, reduce further to quarter or smaller amounts, individualized. Confirm against label.
Formula-by-formula application
Doses below reflect Dr. Miller's clinical dosing. Confirm servings against the current tech sheet.
| Layer / role | Formula | Structure-function role | Practitioner notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vital Adapt® | Adaptogen / antioxidant pathway support* | ~3-5 droppers 2-3x/day | Standard base. |
| Complete Omega Essentials® | EPA/DHA/GLA structural support* | Adult per label; child ~half | Can be opened; freeze liquid omegas for palatability. |
| Glycine + Dual-Mag Complex™ | Nervous-system calming / sleep* | Glycine ~1 tsp with magnesium | Good for sleep and regulation. |
| Cell Guardian™ | Phase 2 detox support* | Per label; openable for children | Only after exposures reduced; evening dosing option. |
| Amino Whey Pro Advantage® | Protein / cysteine for glutathione* | Per label | Use NAC instead if dairy not tolerated. |
| Iron Synergy® | Iron repletion* | Per label; confirm iron status | Test before and during. |
| Vibrant Mind® | Focus and cognition* | Scale for age | Targeted cognitive layer. |
Dr. Miller uses additional adjuncts at clinical discretion: specific B12 and folate forms for methylation-sensitive children, a small amount of lithium before B12, NAC where dairy is avoided, low-dose melatonin, TUDCA for biliary support, and particular binders. These are practitioner-directed and individualized, and several are not Natura products. Keep them separate from the Natura protocol and hold oncology cautions (glutathione and glutamine) in mind.
Individualize B-vitamin forms for methylation-sensitive children. Scale pediatric doses carefully and expect adherence challenges. Test where mold or environmental toxins are suspected before treating. Hold oncology cautions for glutathione and glutamine. Use NAC rather than whey where dairy is not tolerated. Note perinatal risk factors and refer per clinical indication.
